Julia's Top Ten Books To Be Made Into Movies

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

Each week we will post a new Top Ten list that one of our bloggers here will answer. Everyone is welcome to join! All we ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND add your name to the Linky widget so that everyone can check out other bloggers lists! If you don't have a blog, just post your answers as a comment. Have fun with it! It's a fun way to get to know your fellow bloggers.

Future Top Ten Tuesday topics can be found here!

Hello again, and welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday! Julia here bringing you the movies I want to see made (whether they are in production or not). I do have to mention though it was really hard finding books that have not been made into some sort of visual medium (movies, miniseries, TV shows). Did all of you have the same problem?

Top Ten Books I'd Like To See Made Into A Movie

1. Catching Fire and Mockingjay
I guess this one is cheating a bit because Catching Fire is most likely already in pre-production. It's pretty much guaranteed that these are going to get made because of the boatload of monie$ Hunger Games made and is still making. I am okay with that :) (Shameless plug: Book vs. Movie: The Hunger Games @CompBiblio)

2. His Dark Materials
Oh, stupid studios! Why did you have to mess with The Golden Compass so much that it turned to cinematic trash?! I saw the filmed scenes in the trailer for the correct ending! I know the ending was there. I so wanted to see Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig acting out some scenes from The Amber Spyglass! I would love if these got made, but sadly I don't think it will be for a while now, if ever :(

3. Across the Universe
Across the Universe, the first book in Beth Revis' as of yet incomplete trilogy of the same name, I think would translate to film very well. It's got the love element (yay! not a triangle!) and some cool futuristic sci fi elements combined with an interesting and engaging plot. All the best ingredients for a good blockbuster movie.

4. The Book Thief
Though this would break my heart to actually view, I think The Book Thief could be a great film. It would need an outstanding director/visionary to interpret the character of Death best for the screen, but I think it could be done, and done well.

5. The Desperate Duchesses
Eloisa James' romance novel series that was inspired by Desperate Housewives (though of Georgian England) I think would make a WONDERFUL BBC/Masterpiece miniseries. The entire story through the six books weaves together so well and yet each book completely stands alone. I know it would be super popular with the Downton Abby crowd. Romance in Georgian England? Yes please. Though actually, now that I think on it, I'd want HBO or Showtime to pick this up so we can see all the yummy dirty scenes. Done with tasteful class of course :)

6. Soulless
Steampunk movie! With the success of the new adaptations of Sherlock Holes which are somewhat steampunk, I think this would have a foothold in the money making market for movies. And if it did well, it could continue through the series. I think this could just be a really cool standalone movie, though.

7. The Graveyard Book
I really enjoyed this book and think it would be a pretty interesting movie to make. Cool effects for the dead people, too!

8. What Happens in London
A fun romantic comedy, but instead of being in modern time, Regency London. Seriously, I don't understand why more romance novels aren't made into movies... I think they would make money. More money than some of the crap they put on screen today.

9. My Name Is Memory
While My Name Is Memory really intrigued me, it left me bored at some parts. Despite that, I think this could be translated to film really well. Especially with the time/reincarnation elements. Some of the things that didn’t work well for me in book form could be translated to the visual medium and some of the crappy/strange/series beginning(?) ending issues changed :)

10. The History of Love
Oh, The History of Love. You would be a movie I would head straight to the theaters for. As I think a lot of women would.

So that's enough of me talking. What are your lists? Link them up below!

  1. Great list! I totally agree re: His Dark Materials--I would've loved to have seen Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig's interaction in the last installment! *le sigh*

As for The Graveyard Book, I totally agree. And I read the other day that they are planning on adapting it for the big screen! I flailed in excitement xD

  2. Oh, The Book Thief. What a brilliant choice. I didn't even think about that book. Totally deserves to be a movie. Love your list!, Julia! :)

  3. Such a fun topic this week! From what I have read about Across the Universe, I think it would be really cool to see it come to life on screen.

  4. I have His Dark Materials on my list, too, as well as a couple other books that have already been made or optioned for movies. I figure Hollywood doesn't seem to have any qualms about re-making perfectly good movies, why not work on flops too?

  5. I didn't even think of THE BOOK THIEF or MY NAME IS MEMORY but those are great choices! I'd be SO interested in seeing how they translated Death as a narrator on to the big screen. That would be one interesting movie! And I would totally go see THE HISTORY OF LOVE - I adored parts of that book and then was really frustrated with it in other parts. I wonder if a movie of it would help me appreciate the book more?

  6. I've always wanted to read My Name is Memory...

This is my first time to participate in this wonderful meme! I'm glad I found this.

  7. I can't wait for Catching Fire and Mockingjay! Nov. 2013 is the expected release date for CF or at least it was the last time I looked.

    ReplyDelete
  8. My Name is Memory would be amazing … we had similar thought processes with Soulless - would LOVE to see that series in the theatres!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh Soulless made my top ten too! I think it would be so awesome to see the special effects for it. I also agree with you on The Golden Compass. Why did they ruin it, kinda like Percy Jackson and Eragon. sigh but atlas there isn't much that can be done about it now. My Top Ten Books to Movies!

  10. Great list. A few of those just missed being on my list.

  11. i didn't care for the graveyard book. i am excited about the next two hunger games movies because they should be filming on my hometown in NC again and this time i will be living there and can celebrity stalk! :)

  12. ooh Across the Universe could definitely be a fun movie. I liked the book but I think they could make the story even better. I loved the Graveyard Book but It wouldn't be my first thought for a movie hmmm that's interesting to think about. ANd I totally 100% agree with you on The Book Thief I think they could make a great movie out of that.

  13. I haven't read the His Dark Materials series, but I own them and I hope to get to them soon! But I've heard The Golden Compass movie adaptation was pretty bad. And Across the Universe! That would be very cool to see the ship in movie form! Great list!

  14. Great Topic we had so much fun check out our picks!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I hadn't heard of many of these books, but I have heard of THE BOOK THIEF and from what I hear I think it would make an amazing film.

Soulless sounds like it would make a really interesting film too! And I am pretty sure Catching Fire and Mockingjay will be produced. I can't imagine them not with the box office draw.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm sure that I read somewhere that Disney have bought the film rights to The Graveyard Book.

    ReplyDelete
  17. This seems to be a very unique list! I haven't yet read The Golden Compass... but I didn't watch it either.
Soulless is on my TBR list, so maybe then I'll understand what steampunk is, exactly (the web definition isn't excessively clear).
And the Book thief (although I haven't finished it yet) would be very interesting on screen - with the right director.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Catching Fire! Mockingjay! Absolutely looking forward to those two!
    Great list! ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  19. Totally with you on Catching Fire/Mockingjay. Re: The Golden Compass, even the director himself, Chris Weitz, said in an interview that "they" (the studio) ruined his movie. I agree that more romance novels should be made into movies, it seems like lately every YA book out there gets optioned for a movie, definitely trying to get another blockbuster like Twilight and HG.

  20. I thought about including The Book Thief on my list, but one of my favourite elements of it is the narration by Death, and I'm not sure if it would be as effective in movie form.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I've only read Catching Fire from your list. ::runs off to add more books to my ever-growing to-read list!::

    ReplyDelete
  22. Catching Fire & Mockingjay! ♥ I can't wait!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've seen Across the Universe on a few lists, I'm going to have to put that one on my TBR pile.

    ReplyDelete
  24. This is the first time I participate and I hope I have done it right, lol :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Across the Universe was on my list too!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I totally agree about His Dark Materials (and put it on my list as well)! If they had only stuck to the real story, it would have been wonderful. And we would have gotten to see the next two books as movies. Oh well.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I must agree that Golden Compass (movie) lacked a little.

I love the list though. Every one of these books in on my TBR list at the moment. And I am pretty sure these movies would go over to film very well. Great list.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Those all sound like they would make great movies. I haven't read a lot of those, but I know what most are about and I think those are great picks!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. The Book Thief would be awesome, if done right. I also agree with Soulless. That would be a lot of fun. Great list!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I can't believe I left The Book Thief off my list! You're right, it would be great on screen. I'd also love it if a movie studio had another try at His Dark Materials. I think there are many aspects of Across the Universe that would work as a movie, but one thing stopped me putting it in my Top Ten: How would the multi-racial ethnicity of the people on the ship be shown?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Great list! I agree with your 1st two choices, but I haven't read any of the others, so I can't comment on those. This is my 1st time participating, and it was so much fun!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I flip-flopped over adding The Book Thief to my list... but in the end decided not to. It was such a touching book, and really became very special to me, that I don't want it messed with. I feel a little overprotective of it and would worry that Hollywood might mess it up!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I was thisclose to adding The Book Thief. The only reason I didn't was because I feel like I've included it in a lot of lists lately. I love it so much.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yes, I had the same problem! I had to quit after 5...LOL

    ReplyDelete
  35. The Book Thief is in my list but I have doubts as well (especially about the character Death). By the way, I believe I'm the only Turkish person that participated in this meme and the books I chose (other than The Book Thief) differ from the majority :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I loved the Hunger Games movie, so I hope that the Catching Fire and Mockingjay adaptations are equally amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  37. RIP, movie potential of "His Dark Materials." Such a bummer. They're pretty tricky stories to adapt to YA, though, especially once you get to the head-exploding antireligious craziness that is "Amber Spyglass." Don't get me wrong, I love the books, but they'd be a hard sell as movies.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I didn't even think about The Graveyard Book! That would be cool to see made into a movie!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Freaking My Name is Memory. THAT BOOK. haha. I agree that it would make a great movie, and I feel the same. It was so boring at times and just... left me so unsatisfied. I think it's supposed to be part of a trilogy or something but no word on the next book which is probably a bad sign, right?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I haven't read a lot of the books on your list, but now I feel like I need to!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I feel like I have a huge new pile of reading to do after reading through the list. So many I haven't even heard of!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I LOVE seeing the variety in choices this week! This is definitely a very good question. :) Thanks for sharing everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  43. i would love to see the graveyard book as a movie. not sure if it'd like to see it animated or live action but either way it would be great.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I totally agree with you on The Golden Compass. I was so shocked when I went to see it in the theaters, and they didn't have the right ending, especially when I saw bits of it in the previews! I actually stayed through all the credits thinking maybe something was at the very end. I did love Dakota Blue Richards as Lyra, though.

I never thought of it, but it would be SOOO much fun to see What Happens in London as a movie. It is one of my favorite Julia Quinn novels. So funny.

I actually think I read that The Graveyard Book will be made into a movie.

    Great list.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I have not read any of these but I also have a few more that I have added to my tbr list. Thanks.

  46. Oooh I completely agree about The Book Thief! That book literally blew my mind and I'm surprised there haven't been any rumblings about it in the movie industry because it's so popular. Hopefully it'll be made into one sooner or later!

    ReplyDelete
  47. This is a great question for my first week. :)
I chose Across the Universe too! You're right about it being a blockbuster, and I think teens would really enjoy the romance aspect. I'll have to check out The Book Thief.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I really want to read The Graveyard Book and The Book Thief. Heard such great things about those! I need to get on that! :) And I have never heard of The Desperate Duchesses but it does sound perfect for a BBC/Masterpiece series!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Great topic for the week! I haven't read many of the books on your list, but I think I definitely need to pick up The Book Thief after seeing it on so many lists! And oh. My goodness. Catching Fire definitely cannot come out soon enough!

    Here's my Top Ten Tuesday

    ReplyDelete
  50. I love your list! The Graveyard Book and The Book Thief made it into my top ten list as well! I really do hope The Book Thief becomes a movie because it would be interesting and wonderful to see such an eyeopening and heart wrenching book come to life!

  51. I have heard so many good things about the Book Thief that it doesn't surprise me that it would make a good movie! I do need to read it, however to find out for myself. Great list and topic this week!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Soulless would make a fantastic movie! Great list!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I whole-heartedly agree with you about His Dark Materials! I was so disappointed in the movie and I'm even more disappointed that the other two probably won't make it into movie form. I loved the cast; it had so much potential, but it fizzled.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Did anyone else do casting like me? It's so much fun to think about!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yes to all on the list, but double yes to Soulless- what an awesome movie/mini-series that would make!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I definitely agree with Soulless and The Book Thief! (And Catching Fire and Mockingjay).

Heather @ It's All About Me

    ReplyDelete
  62. Agree on His Dark Materials!!! They already made the first one, come on! And, I soooo need to read The Book Thief!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Soulless would be too fun as a movie! The Graveyard Book would make a great movie in the style of Tim Burton!

    ReplyDelete
  64. The Golden Compass made my list, too! I would just love for them to remake it properly, with the same great cast. I'm not sure how the other books, particularly the last one, would work as movies, and now we may never know!

What a fun list this week!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yay! Just did my first Top Ten Tuesday!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Completely agree with The Book Thief!

  70. Opps that comment was supposed to go on a different entry...

    ReplyDelete
  71. I'm glad I'm not the only one who was outraged by The Golden Compass... they should definitely remake it properly! It was nothing compared to the book

    ReplyDelete
  72. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought The Golden Compass was crap. It was nothing compared to the book - I really hope they remake it properly!
