Paula's Top Ten Reading Goals for 2013

For the list of past topics and future schedule, click here!

Hello all! I hope the first week of 2013 has treated you well :D As the new year rolled in I got really excited about completing 2012's goals and making a new pretty list of 2013's reading challenges. This year I have significantly lowered my numerical  goals (book count, page count) because - thanks to my job at a fabric company I am surrounded by fabric in my apartment - and I need to spend some time on my other hobby: sewing. (wahh having 2 time consuming hobbies!)

So here are my Top Ten (cough 8) 2013 reading goals:

1. Read at least 40 books
2. Read at least 15,000 pages
3. Read 5 books from my shelf before buying more (always a difficult one >_< )
4. Read 5 books that have been on my "to-read" list for over a year
5. Read The Lord of The Rings trilogy
6. Read further into the Discworld series
7. Read a book over 500 pages long
8. Read a book of short stories

I think (hope) those are manageable goals for this year.
I look forward to seeing what every one is challenging themselves to do this year!

  1. Nothing like refining your goals through a series of posts. :) You have some super ambitious goals this year. I'm impressed.

I'm reading LOTR this year, too. Actually it's a reread, and I'm right there with you on the TBR reads. So important. Happy reading!

  2. Oh, I absolutely ADORE the Discworld. Making Money is one of my faves, but the entire Sam Vimes series is also well-loved.

(I could only come up with 7 for my list, so you did better than me!)

  3. Wow, great list of diverse goals! The one where you have to read 5 books before buying more is a good idea. Hard to stick to I bet, but nonetheless, a good idea ;)

Good luck with your goals & I hope you find a suitable balance between sewing and reading!

I recently blogged about my 2013 goals while celebrating my blogoversary.

  4. oooh I love the idea of reading 5 books that be on your list for over a year! My biggest book goal is to start a book club (online and/or local)

  5. I always plan on not buying another book until reading 5 from my shelves, and I think it has yet to work. The problem is that sales and kindle daily deals come along and I just can't resist.

  6. Awesome goals! Good luck with them

  7. These sound doable. You'll feel especially good after you do 3 and 4, probably the hardest because we keep lusting after new releases. Happy reading in 2013. My post is up.

  8. I'm a big fan of the local library, particularly since they have a great selection of new stuff *and* they let me borrow ebooks, from my iPad no less! It's really hard to argue with (kinda) free books :)

  9. This is a good, realistic list. I hope it goes well for you :)

  10. oooh...looks like a fun challenge. If I can figure out some good, viable goals, I'll be back to sign up. Your goals look good...although finishing old stuff before buying new is SO hard, isn't it? haha

  11. Finishing some of my unread books over newer ones to my collection is also on my list.

Good luck with your goals :-)

  12. I love the simplicity of your list. I think the Discworld one will be easiest to complete - those books are so addictive! Watching The Hobbit over Christmas made me want to read the book again - everyone should have a bit of Tolkein on their list. Good luck with meeting your reading goals this year :-)

  13. Great list of reading goals. Good luck with completing them all.

  14. I completely understand being torn between two hobbies! You have to find some balance.

#3 Reading books you already have before buying more is soooooo hard to do!

And I thought reading a book of short stories was a unique/fun goal! I enjoyed Laini Taylor's Lips Touch Three Times.

    Good luck with your goals!

    1. I hope you achieve some, if not all, of your goals this year! Good to see I'm not the only one who struggles to read books I already own because I keep purchasing/borrowing/receiving new ones!

  17. I think your short story resolution is great. I feel like I never explore essays, short story, or poetry, but it would be good to try it out. I hope it goes well!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I wish you luck with your goals, and extra luck with #3. Buying books are so easy...but actually reading them isn't always so easy. Good luck with all your sewing!

  28. Great list of bookish goals! Much simpler than my goals! Luck to both of us! Lucky 13, right?!? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I really like your goal of reading a book of short stories. I don't do that nearly as often as I would like. Look forward to seeing your progress!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ooooo - I should read Lord of the Rings!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. We have a lot of the same goals, and I'm surprised to find that I'm not the only person on earth who hasnt read the Lord of the Rings, haha. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Excited to try and stick to my goals. Wish everyone else luck as well!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Great goals, especially the one about reading more of what you have before getting more books! I'm just not sure I could stick to that one!

  41. Great list! I definitely need to join you on number 3. I neglect so many of my books! And people keep recommending the Discworld novels to me so I really must get round to reading them. :)

  42. I plan the read the LotR trilogy this year too. :)

  43. Great list! Although I didn't even THINK about reading books before buying any more, because I know I just can't do it.

Check out my list here if you'd like to.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm going to try to read more of my owned books as well, lol, much as it pains me! Great goals!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Love your list! I too am hoping to read short stories in 2013 - I find that that is something I can actually commit to in my after-work-zombie mode. Thanks for sharing!

Good luck reaching your reading goals!

  50. Great Top Ten Tuesday! :) It was really fun! :)

  51. These are some great goals -- especially reading The Lord of the Rings. That's been a goal of mine forever. One of these days I'll sit down with it, probably when my kid is ready for it. :)

This meme really got me thinking about my goals and I appreciate it! Thanks so much!

  52. I hear you with trying to read books you've already bought before buying any more. Right now my budget is kind-a tight so I really hope I can do this one too!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I made a couple of your goals my own: http://neyhart.blogspot.com/2013/01/top-ten-reading-goals-for-2013.html?m=1

    Good luck with your goals!(:

  55. Paula, I'm surprised you've never read LOTR, you're in for a treat and they will definitely help with the page count! As for 500 pages, any of the HP books should work ;)

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm noticing that "stop buying books" is a common one. :) I know the feeling.

Ooh, Discworld. That series is so awesome. I need to dig back into that one too.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I like your goals (i may have taken a few for myself since it's really hard to come up with 10!) You must read The Lord of the Rings!! (just saying)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Your goals are great! Especially number 8! I have barely read ANY short stories! I always think it would be hard to connect to the characters in only 60 or so pages. Write a post on any good short story collections you find!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I love the simple goals you listed. Mine are more long-winded. Typical! This is my first time doing Top Ten Tuesday. Thanks for hosting such a great meme. Don't know why it took me so long.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Love this meme, glad I found it. Will be back

I may have to tweak my goals, but At least I have them written down now!
